Russia is a fabulous venue for martial arts, because involving police (“Militia”) in conflict resolution can potentially lead to bigger problems (extorted bribes, etc.) especially if you aren’t white/heterosexual. I lived in St. Petersburg for a year and worked out with a fabulous Dagestani teacher, Aikikai affiliated, at one of the major schools there – Lenkai Dojo. His name is Vladimir Tagirov and I highly recommend anyone in that area to check out his advanced Aikido classes.

The dojo has a wall at the entrance with pictures of famous teachers who have visited there. It reads like a who’s-who of significant Aikidoka. Possibly surprising to some; one of the first guests from the West to visit just after the fall of the Soviet Union in 1992 was Chuck Norris:)
