This is a remarkable video of Hiroshi Tada, one of the last of the postwar generation of Aikikai instructors. Tada Sensei, now aged 84, reveals his highly developed sensitivity, ability to blend, and incredible stamina. What a model for all aikido teachers to emulate!

Tada Sensei has always led a moderate lifestyle avoiding the excesses to which many of his generation succumbed. The obvious result is his longevity and vigorous health forged through aikido training as can be seen in this video.

  1. Nothing replaces self-discipline…

It would be appreciable to see how elderly aikido practitioners take ukemi since falls have been the main cause of injury among seniors. They would certainly benefit more from taking ukemi than from throwing.

    Any opinions on that?

I’m a younger ‘elderly’ aikido practitioner [68]…while moving quickly two day’s ago I hit a uplifted section of side walk and did a forward ukemi landed on my feet and kept going to the wide eyed looks of others on the same walk way…just rolled w/out a thought…muscle memory and constant keiko are key!
