I am not sure if the technical level of the taekwondoka is high enough to truthfully test the Aikidoka.. I am not claiming the Aikidoka has advanced level either, however, I know from EXPERIENCE it is not as easy at it seems on this video to block a PROPER kick with hands.. a STRONG kick thrown by an experienced martial artist can easily BREAK your forearm. I have seen a tragic and dramatic version on a K1 fight, where Boniasky broke the forearm of Eric Lebonnierre (probably spelled in a bad way) with just a high kick. (well he is actually a kick boxer but you get the point)
The most interesting part here is that the Aikidoka struggled a lot to get a nice wrist lock, he could not even perform a kotegaeshi or sankyo even though he tried at a few instances.. Of course, the gloves are a big obstacle but a technique which is applied to the full arm such as an udegaraminage might have not worked either because of the way the taekwondoka acted.
My honest conclusion is that I am not impressed enough with the Aikidoka because you do not need to practise Aikido in order to off balance your opponent with sweeps as he does on this video. I would love to see a 7th Dan Aikidoka fighting an Olympic Taekwondoka, there we might have a better idea regarding how the Aikidoka would try to avoid the kicks (coming triple faster) or block them (triple STRONGER)
Arigato Gosaimashta for uploading such an unusual video, which eventually made all of us think different aspects of martial arts
This is one of those silly [stupid?] “what-if” scenarios that you hear people at a bar talk about after one two many drinks. Unfortunately, in this case, it was actually carried out, videoed, and put on YT.
None of the TKD guys’ kicks were on target–that’s not TKD. And, the “aikido-ka” (he’s wearing a hakama–does that make him an aikido-ka??) was FORCING his techniques on his opponent–that’s not aikido.
So where does that leave this “demonstration”? Maybe just two guys in pajamas jumping around, perhaps?
This is not the message of aikido.
